Health & Safety at Work – What should the business consider?

The American Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with its HR Committee organized the “Health & Safety at Work – Implementation Challenges from the Business Point of View” Conference. The event was highly attended by the members. This forum brought more information on one of the key laws for the business daily practice.
The Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Social Welfare and Youth, Ms. Vjollca Braho, the representatives of the Labor Inspectorate, the experts of KPMG – Ms. Arjola Goxhaj and Mr. Alban Bello – and Ms. Frosina Gjino from AOSHCs focused on issues of the implementation of the law and the regulatory systems for each sector and also on the practical elements that the businesses should consider. The conference encouraged great discussions between professionals.

Highly valuing this meeting and its purpose, the Executive Director of AmCham, Ms. Enida Bezhani praised not only the role of the experts, but also of the members who, with the questions, comments and issues they raise, gave a fuller dimension to the Conference and increased AmCham responsibility to pursue the issues that came up.

During the meeting members urged experts and representatives of the state institutions to clarify elements related to safety that are not quite clear in the law, as an example: what should be the role of the professional doctor given that it is not very clear from the DCM; lack of the opportunities by the businesses to install external emergency stairs in buildings where they are missing, although the relevant permits have been approved by the municipality. As the law is updated, some workplace safety regulatory systems remain old and do not reflect the reality of today. These issues were raised by the business experts who have identified the need for some of them to be addressed as soon as possible with the relevant institutions as to reflect better the current situation. AmCham will follow up on all the definitions in the law, which currently cause uncertainties or bring about problems during implementation and lobby for relevant changes with the respective institutions.
